It's the "Pink October Woman" news, and the marinette team can't stay silent! Indeed, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide and in France. And women, that's us!
A few figures, though, are important.
It accounts for approximately one-third of all new cases of cancer in women, with an increasing incidence over the years, although the mortality rate is decreasing thanks to early detection and more effective treatments.
In France, according to data from Santé Publique France, approximately 61,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in 2023, with a mortality rate of nearly 12,000 deaths annually. This makes it the most common cancer in women, but also the one with the best chance of cure when detected early. Globally, more than 2.3 million new cases are diagnosed each year, and it is the leading cause of cancer death in women, although survival rates vary considerably depending on the country and access to care.
What can cause the disease?
Les facteurs de risque sont multiples et incluent des composantes individuelles, comportementales, professionnelles et environnementales
Risk factors are multiple and include individual, behavioral, occupational, and environmental components.
First, age.
It is a significant risk factor, with an incidence that increases after age 50, a family history, a genetic predisposition, women who have already had breast cancer or certain types of benign breast diseases, lifetime exposure to natural hormones, and prolonged use of hormonal treatments: contraception or hormone replacement therapy during menopause.
Then, lifestyle.
Our daily behaviors play a significant role in the development of this cancer.
Here are a few examples:
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Obesity (especially after menopause),
- A sedentary lifestyle
- And an unbalanced diet
are known risk factors.
However, breastfeeding, regular physical activity, and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables appear to offer a protective effect.
Occupation can also play a role...
Unfortunately, yes. Certain occupations expose women to carcinogenic chemicals and can increase the risk of breast cancer, such as night shift work or flexible working hours.
Get screened, don't hesitate!
Screening is essential for detecting the disease at an early stage. In France, the national screening program offers a mammogram every two years to women aged 50 to 74, combined with a clinical breast exam.
It helps reduce mortality by detecting small, often asymptomatic tumors. However, there is debate about the risks of overdiagnosis, i.e., detecting cancers that would not have progressed or caused problems during the woman's lifetime.
Breast cancer remains a major health problem worldwide, although it is increasingly under control thanks to screening efforts and therapeutic advances. Screening is a crucial tool for early detection, thus increasing the chances of cure.
Finally, vigilance for physical signs and regular self-examination can contribute to better and faster treatment.
What can be done for Pink October?
Effective prevention, combined with awareness of risk factors, could reduce the incidence of this disease.
